Glutamine and honey are endorsed by the 2020 MASCC guidelines for their topical and systemic effects in the prevention and treatment of Oral Mucositis (OM). OM is a common, debilitating side effect of Chemo and or Radiation therapy.
Glutamed ORO also contains Ca betaHydroxy-beta-Methylbutyrate (CaHMB). CaHMB is a metabolite of the essential amino acid leucine. It contributes to muscle growth and preservation, by reducing protein breakdown and promoting protein synthesis. It has been found to significantly impact lean muscle preservation and may potentially reduce sarcopenia in cancer patients.
GLUTAMED ORO FOR ORAL MUCOSITIS
- Oral Mucositis (OM) is a common side-effect of cancer treatment, in patients receiving high-dose treatment and a combination of both chemo and radiation therapy.
- Mucositis is defined as inflammation anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, including the lips, mouth, throat, and oesophagus.
- OM occurs within 1-2 weeks of cancer treatment and can persist well after treatment completion.
- OM can cause eating difficulties, food avoidance and difficulty swallowing, due to the formation of painful sores or ulcers. Patients who experience OM have a higher risk of malnutrition, leading to loss of weight and muscle mass.
- OM and difficulty with oral hygiene increases the risks of oral infections and the need for antibiotics.
- OM can lead to treatment interruptions and the need for enteral or IV feeding, requiring re-admission to hospital.
- A loss of taste (Dysgeusia) is also a common side effect, starting a few weeks into cancer treatment. This results in a loss of appetite, potential inadequate food intake and poses a further risk of malnutrition.
GLUTAMED ORO FOR CANCER RELATED MALNUTRITION
Cachexia is a complex syndrome characterised by:
- Unintentional weight loss due to decreased nutrient intake as a result of low appetite, nausea, swallowing difficulties (dysphasia), weakness and lack of energy.
- Loss of muscle mass and strength (sarcopenia) due to metabolic alternations, e.g. increased protein turnover and a reduction in physical activity.
- Systemic inflammation.
Cachexia is not responsive to normal diet alone.
